I am considering purchasing a new set of Kitchen Knives.?

There are so many different kinds and brands out there. Block sets, individuals, type of steel they are made from. Should I consider a nice block set? I have heard Henkels are good, but I looked and they come in many different qualities. What I am looking for is a nice, inexpensive set of cutlery, that will last for many years, would like it to have all the necessary knives needed in the kitchen, plus a nice carving knife and fork, for the holiday meals included as well. I have looked at several reviews on the Ronco sixstar knife set, and the general opinion is that those are basically you get what you pay for. Can anyone suggest to me what kind of Knives I should invest in? German? Japanese? And what brand? I would prefer edged knives that require a steel, and not the ones with the "never dull" saw blades. Thanks in advance for your responses.

I have owned a block set of Henkels for the past 20 years. I paid $120.00 for the set then. I love them, use them every day and personally I think you get what you pay for.
