Henkels Knife Case

Henkels Knife Case
Are Emeril knife sets okay for a young beginner chef?

My son is 15, loves cooking and is planning on becoming a chef. He hasn't had any classes yet, but will go to a 2 or 3 session class in January. He asked for a knife set for Christmas. I've seen questions regarding high-end sets by Henkels, Wurstof , Victorinox, etc. But he's just a young beginner, and spending that kind of money would preclude any other gifts, which I'm sure he doesn't want to do.

I can get a 5 piece Emeril set for $30 in a nice case. Would it be a total waste of money, or a good starting-off point for him? I think he'd probably like it, but will culinary teachers and other students at the beginner's level show disapproval?
Thanks for your inputs. I passed on the Emeril set and got this:

$29 total incl shipping. Did I do OK?

A set for that cheap tells me that these are going to be of very poor quality.

If that is all you can spend then you could get him one Victorinox for that price. Not top of the line but not bad for the price either.

If you can some how get more money together I would suggest: Wusthof, the high end Henckels, Global or Shun.

Yes these are all a lot more but you will actually save a lot of money in the long run because they literally never need to be replaced and you save a lot of money on sharpening because they only need to be sharpened professionally about once a year.

Note of Henckles: They make different lines the high end line is very good. They also make a very cheap line that they sell at Target, Walmart etc. which are not at all good. If you go with the Henckles you have to make sure it is the high end line.

Yes: the follow students will not approval. It will make it look like he is not aware of what the best kinds of tools are. Also, people "in the industry" kind of laugh at anything that has some famous Chefs name on it.

I have had a Shun for years now and it is still just as sharp as the day I bought it. Much better quality and saves you a lot of money in the long run.

Get the best knife you can possible afford and don't worry about getting a set. The Chefs knife is really what gets used the most and is the most important.
