Wheatgrass can be used in a wide variety of ways and for different purposes so knowing how to grow wheatgrass at home enables you to easily harness the power of its health boosting properties.
Before you begin to learn how to grow wheatgrass at home you will need a couple of things:
A flat tray that has holes in the bottom, high quality organic soil and fertilizer, a proper, well lit space, sprinkler and, of course, quality berries.
Once you follow the next few steps, you will learn how to grow wheatgrass at home in no time.
Okay, here we go:
Step 1 - Prepare your wheatgrass berries by rinsing and dip them in a cup of water. You should leave it there for 10 hours or so.
Step 2 - Take your tray and cover its bottom with sheets of paper. This ensures that the roots stay in the tray. Now put your quality soil with fertilizer into the tray. You shouldn't put too much, but fill it to an inch and a half depth. Now, take the seeds that you left overnight out of the pot and sprinkle them over the soil. Make sure the density of the berries is not high. You don't want the berries touching each other.
Step 3 - Take some soil and use it to lightly cover the berries. Use some kind of paper to cover the tray thus providing the shade berries need to sprout correctly. This will also ensure that the berries are not eaten by birds. Leave it like that for a day.
Step 4 - The next day take off the paper that was covering the tray and sprinkle some water over the soil, but not too much, then cover it again. Repeat until green leaves start to appear. When this happens, don't cover the tray any more.
Step 5 - Begin to water wheatgrass twice a day. After a week or so, the wheatgrass will probably be ready to be harvested. You should cut it an inch above the soil using a sharp knife, or better yet, scissors.
All that's left is to prepare your freshly harvested wheatgrass the way you see fit. The most common way is to juice it and drink on an empty stomach early in the morning for the max effect.
For a proper preparation of wheatgrass, you will need a masticating juicer. A centrifugal one won't do the job properly. Masticating juicers spin slower than centrifugal ones and, as a result, produce less heat and oxidation, which are detrimental to the nutrients contained in wheatgrass.
