Many of us have a hard time throwing or giving away a lot of the items that comprise our homes. We typically evaluate our hoarding practices when we have to move, when we expect guests, or when the spirit of spring cleaning gets to us. While it's okay to hang on to sentimental and practical items, it's not okay to keep them if you aren't using them. That's what classifies those items as clutter.
You don't have to wait until you have to relocate before clearing your home of clutter. You can get to work right now (little by little, of course) towards living a more clutter-free lifestyle. Start by taking a look at your shopping practices. Ask yourself these questions next time you go out to shop:
Will I be replacing something at home with this?
Before you even reach the check out line, take a good look at the product you're holding. If it looks like something you have at home, buy it with the intention of getting rid of the similar product you already own. Otherwise, leave it right back on the shelf where you found it.
If this breaks, am I willing to spend more money to replace it?
A lot of our clutter stems from stuff you're just too lazy or too broke to fix. Take a look at what you want to buy and ask yourself if you're willing to spend extra money to fix it or replace it. Nine times out of ten, you'll set it back down.
Is this something I really need?
You don't need ear muffs in Florida. You don't need a magnetic knife strip if you already have a wooden knife holder. Prior to making any purchase, evaluate whether you really need this item. Base what you need on function, practicality, and quality.
Does this classify as an impulse purchase?
Impulse purchases are big business for retailers. If you walked into a store with the intention of buying one thing only to walk away with a cartful of items, you bet your bottom dollar you just made a few impulse purchases. Anything you didn't intend to buy when you walked in is an impulse buy. Curb this habit, and you'll be on your way to reducing clutter while saving money.
Do I have a place in mind where I can store this?
Try to think of where you will put the product you want to buy. Don't purchase anything that doesn't have a designated place in your home.
The best way to avoid a cluttered home is to stop buying nonessential goods. Use these questions next time you hit the mall, and you won't find yourself on A&E's Hoarders anytime soon.
